Community Care Clinic - History

2005
Marian Peters, PA-C and Jack Whitlock, MD provide health care services to Hospitality House clients.
Volunteers plan for a community clinic that will provide health care services for the uninsured in Boone and surrounding area.

2006
The Community Care Clinic is established. Volunteers prepare the facility and open a primary care clinic for the uninsured at the former Health Department (Hannah Building).
The first Community Care Clinic patient receives treatment in May 2006.

2007
Open House is held for health care professionals.
Community Care Clinic (CCC) gains 501(c)(3) non-profit status.
CCC joins the North Carolina Association of Free Clinics.
CCC is awarded Blue Cross/Blue Shield start-up and matching funds grants.
CCC adds counseling and chiropractic services.

2008
CCC adds acupuncture to the services offered.
Community fundraising begins!

2009
Rebecca Moore of Boone is selected as the first Executive Director of the Community Care Clinic.
Marian Peters, PA, PhD, officially begins her new duties as Clinic Director. She had been serving in an unpaid capacity as the primary healthcare provider since its inception in 2005. She was one of the original founders and the driving force behind the development of the Community Care Clinic.

2010
The clinic moves to providing services 40 hours per week
Services now include primary care, mental health, physical therapy, chiropractic, orthopedics and gynecology. Specialty care is provided by volunteer health care professionals.
The clinic receives first-time funding from Watauga County, High Country United Way and Appalachian Women’s Fund

2011
The clinic hires a new Executive Director, Melissa Selby.
Fifty-three volunteer health care professionals now provide services at the clinic.
Eighteen non-medical volunteers assist with clerical tasks and reception.
Dermatology and neurology services are added.
The clinic holds 5th anniversary celebration with over 130 volunteers and supporters attending.
Clinic receives first-time funding from the Town of Boone and High Country Women’s Fund
Clinic partners with ASU’s Department of Social Work to become a placement site for student interns
