Melissa Selby, MSW         Executive Director

Melissa graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1981 and worked as an archaeologist in the Southeast until 1985.  She returned to school and graduated with a master's in social work from the University of Georgia, Athens in 1987.  Melissa has been involved in health care for low-income uninsured and under-insured families since that time.  Most notably, she worked as the Maternal/Child Counselor at the Midwifery Clinic in Athens, Georgia, the Outreach and Medicaid Enrollment Specialist at the Mountain Family Health Center in Nederland, Colorado and the Executive Director of the Women's Resource Center in Fort Collins, Colorado, linking low-income women with free breast and cervical screenings.  She relocated to Boone in 2011 and became the Executive Director of the clinic.  She loves the opportunity to network with others in order to educate the community about the clinic, and believes that health care should be a right for all, not a privilege.  "The clinic is an amazing resource for Watauga County, and the quality of care that our patients receive is outstanding."

Amanda Bliss, PA-C, RD                  Clinic Manager

Amanda graduated in 2010 from D’Youville College in Buffalo, NY with a Master’s Degree in Physican Assistant Studies. She has experience practicing in family medicine, gastroenterology, ear, nose and throat and facial plastic surgery. Amanda is a previous resident of Asheville, NC and relocated to Boone with her husband and 2 sons from Morgantown, West Virginia. Her hobbies include paraelli natural horsemanship and lover of all things horse!

 

Jenna Crawley, MA, LPCA, LCAS         Mental Health Therapist

 Jenna was born and raised in Virginia. She received her bachelor's degree from Virgina Tech, majoring in Psychology and English.  Following college, she spent a year with AmeriCorps in Tucson, Arizona, travelled internationally, and then worked for five years at a therapeutic wilderness school in central Virginia. She completed the clinical and mental health counseling program at Appalachian State and is a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate and Licensed Clinical Addictions Specialist. She completed her internship and worked at New River Behavioral Healthcare and then at DayMark with the school based therapy and outpatient programs. She is an avid runner, enjoys anything outside, is fueled by lifelong learning, and has an amazing husband and two year old daughter.

Angela Swanson, MA                          Medical Assistant

Mary Blackburn                                  Office Manager

Mary graduated from Wilkes Central High School in Wilkes County and attended Caldwell Community College, where she received certification in Early Childhood Education.  After moving to Boone in 1997 she was employed with Blue Ridge Pediatric and Adolescents and gained experience and knowledge in healthcare.  She left Blue Ridge Pediatrics to stay at home with her newborn son, but found herself ready and eager to return to work in the healthcare industry after he started kindergarten.  Over the years she has received training and certifications in insurance coding/billing, HIPPA compliance, and medical office management.  Mary enjoys helping others and feels blessed to be a part of the clinic.  Outside of work she enjoys spending time with family and loved ones.

            

Catherine King                       IT/Operations Manager 

Catherine graduated from college with a BS in engineering and had a 25 year career as a Manufacturing Engineer.  After moving to Boone in 2001, she felt a change of pace was in order and began working as the Parish Administrator for St. Luke’s while maintaining a consulting practice helping various manufacturing companies with their enterprise management systems. In 2010 she began work at the Community Care Clinic and is the computer systems administrator and bookkeeper.

Dale Presnell          Board Chair

Dale Presnell is a life long resident of Watauga County and has worked in the local business community for many years through his job with Boone Drugs, Inc. where he currently serves as a vice president. Dale holds a bachelors degree in Speech Pathology from Appalachian State University and a master's degree in management from Troy University. Dale is a former volunteer in the local big brother program and also serves on the board of directors of The Blue Ridge Community Theater.

     

Tandrea Carter, PhD     Past Board Chair

Tandrea Carter joined the Board in January 2012. She is the Director of Counseling for Faculty and Staff at Appalachian State University.She is a licensed psychologist who earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology, with a concentration in health psychology from the University of Miami. She has worked in a variety of environments addressing an array of mental and physical health issues.

Richard Henson            Chair-Elect

Richard joined the board in 2015 after 36 years at Appalachian State University as a professor of Biology. He also served as assistant and associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences from 1999 - 2006. He retired in 2006 as Professor Emeritis in Biology.

John Whitlock, MD      Medical Director

Dr.  Whitlock received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine/Geriatrics. Before moving to Boone he opened his practice in Eastern Tennessee at Johnson County Memorial Hospital in 1976. Dr. Whitlock retired from Watauga Internal Medicine in 2012.  He has been a highly regarded member of the local medical community for many years.  Dr. Whitlock is an active member of the Clinic’s Board of Directors, and serves as the Medical Director in a volunteer capacity, as well as a volunteer provider at the Clinic.

Betsy Harris              Board Member

Betsy is retired after enjoying 25 years at Appalachian State University as Lab Manager in the Department of Biology. She worked with the introductory biology courses, designing and implementing their lab exercises. Prior to that she worked as a lab technician at Watauga Medical Center. Betsy has a MS in Biochemistry from UMass, Amherst (1975) and more recently a Masters in Public Health from UNC Chapel Hill (2008).  She holds certification as a Clinical Chemist (ASCP). Currently she works as a consultant for publishing companies involved with the production of learning resources for biology students. She also volunteers in the lab at the clinic and served on the Board of Directors from 2007 - 2010 before returning in 2014.

Leslie Sargent Jones           Board Member

Leslie has had a 40 year career in biomedical research and education.  She worked at Appalachian State University for eight years, prior to retiring, as the head of the Honors Program/College.  She worked closely with pre-health majors in particular, and has an interest in promoting the volunteer opportunities at the Community Care Clinic to benefit both the students and the patients.  Leslie is currently serving on the Board of Directors of the national honors organization, NCHC, and continue to direct the online, undergraduate neuroscience journal, IMPULSE, that serves the international biomedical community.

Paul Siegel, PhD              Board Member

 Paul Siegel recently retired and moved back to the High Country full time after spending over 30 years in Africa. There he worked with students, fishers, farmers and governments on sustainable development issues. He received his PhD from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and worked with the World Wildlife Fund for over 20 years.  Paul also serves on the Board of Directors for BioGuinea, a national parks' trust fund in Guinea Bissau, and consults with institutions across Africa on issues related to offshore oil and gas development, marine parks, and helping balance human needs and environmental productivity.

 

Jennifer Teague           Board Member

Jen Teague is the Lois E. Harrill Senior Center Director in Boone.  She has an undergraduate degree in Sociology and a Master’s Degree in Community Counseling from ASU.  She has worked in the aging field for more than 10 years.  She currently serves on the Boone Town Council and lives in Boone with her husband, Josh.  In her spare time, Jen loves teaching yoga and making crafts.  Jen served as a volunteer with the Community Care Clinic 10 years ago when it first opened and is excited about serving on the board!

Angie Shoemake, MSW, CMSW, OSW-C        Board Member

Angie is currently the Social Worker for the Seby B. Jones Regional Cancer center. She grew up in Baltimore and earned a Bachelor’s in English & Sociology at Goucher College. After college she joined AmeriCorps and was a member of the first graduating class of the National Civilian Community Corps. She did a second AmeriCorps program and moved to Sacramento to join the National AIDS Fund and work at a Hospice House. After  AmeriCorps she worked with the homeless and several housing programs.  Angie got her MSW at The University of California at Sacramento and moved to North Carolina in 2003
